Notes on Supernatural S1:

1x01 Death Tally:

2 white females, 1 white male, 2 part-West-Asian females, 1 part-West-Asian male; 2 recurring (2 white females)

1x01 Privilege-Related Insults:

2 'bitch' Dean about a woman, Dean to Sam (jerk)

1x01 Notes:

Azazel is visible only in silhouette; in all other episodes in which he appears, he is played by a white male, so I am assuming him to be a white male here. Constance Welch is played by a part-Iranian actress, so she and her children are listed as characters of color, even though I'm pretty sure the children are played by white actors. I want very badly to count this ep as a race-Bechdel pass, because the children do speak to Constance about something other than a white person, but Constance doesn't speak to the children, so I'm not sure. Two characters are played by two actors each (all four actors white males); I am not counting these characters twice. The number of firemen's voices in the teaser is unclear and not all the speakers are onscreen; two white males are visible (and one black male, who isn't seen to speak and thus isn't counted) and I count between one and three males of unknown ethnicity, who, for the percentage calculations, I'm assuming to be two white males; I make the same assumption about the cop who is heard over the radio. The death tally does not include ten nonspeaking males stated to be of various ethnicities, of whom at least four (going by the pictures Dean shows Sam) are white. Also I am a lil' bit obsessive about proper annotation.

1x02 Death Tally:

1 black male, 2 white males, 1 Native American male

1x02 Privilege-Related Insults:

3 'that Haley girl' from Ranger Wilkinson, Dean, and Sam; 1 'bitch' Dean to presumably-male wendigo

1x02 Notes:

The death tally does not include the more than ten nonspeaking wendigo victims including at least one white male and at least one white female. I am assuming the wendigo was a Native American male because it's a Native American legend.

1x03 Death Tally:

1 white female, 4 white males

1x03 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x03 Notes:

The death tally does not include eight nonspeaking victims of Peter's including at least one male (Christopher Barr) and at least one female, all of whom are likely white. The many kids chattering at the playground are indistinguishable from one another and therefore not counted. This episode is set in Wisconsin, which explains (but does not excuse) the total lack of characters of color: Wisconsin is ninety percent white.

1x04 Death Tally:

100+, both sexes and various ethnicities, including 6 speaking characters (4 white males, 2 white females)

1x04 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x04 Notes:

The death tally does not include any of the phantom traveler's victims who weren't on Flight 2485 (unless Chuck's copilot wasn't on that flight); depending on how many passengers were on each of the other six flights it crashed, its total victim count may be over a thousand. Also not counted are the passengers and the FBI and FAA members whose voices are indistinguishable from one another; these do include two black men and a black woman on Flight 2485 and two black men, a black woman, an East Asian woman, and a South Asian woman on Flight 424. The voice of the airport service desk is female and I assume white. I don't know whether the offscreen conversation between Amanda and her sister qualifies this ep for a Bechdel pass, but luckily Amanda's conversation with a female passenger counts.

1x05 Death Tally:

1 white male, 1 white female

1x05 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x05 Notes:

The death tally does not include two females (Laura and Catherine) and one male (Dave) who died in front of mirrors, the male (Gary Bryman) who died in a hit-and-run, the male and the presumably-white female (Charlie's boyfriend and Linda Shoemaker) who suicided, or the male (Trevor Sampson) presumed to have killed Mary Worthington. Also not counted are the various funeral attendees, who are about evenly divided male/female and none of whom appear to be nonwhite, or the students in Charlie's class, again about equally divided male/female and including one East Asian female, or the antique store owner Mr. Yamashiro, who is presumably Japanese.

1x06 Death Tally:

1 white male

1x06 Privilege-Related Insults:

2 'son of a bitch' Dean about shapeshifter, shapeshifter to Sam

1x06 Notes:

The death tally does not include one female (Emily) whom the shapeshifter kills offscreen. Also not counted is the white male Zach Warren, who never appears except as a shapeshifter or in a photograph and who never speaks. All the actors playing the shapeshifter are white, male, or both, so I am counting the shapeshifter as a white male. I am unsure how many SWAT members speak in the teaser; it sounds like five. One SWAT member is definitely female, but the mask makes it impossible to know whether she speaks; one of the voices sounds female so I assume she does, though I don't know whether her conversation with Becky qualifies this ep for a Bechdel pass. All the SWAT members with visible skin appear to be white; I assume they all are. I don't know whether the offscreen conversations mentioned between Alex and his neighbor make this ep a race-Bechdel pass.

1x07 Death Tally:

2 white males, 1 black female

1x07 Privilege-Related Insults:

1 'Frances' Dean to Sam

1x07 Notes:

The death tally does not include thirteen females killed by Jacob Kearns. I don't know whether the opening conversation between Lori and Taylor qualifies the ep for a Bechdel pass. Not counted are Reverend Sorenson's congregation, who are about evenly split male/female and include one black female and one possibly-Hispanic male, or the partygoers, similarly split male/female, or Lori's sorority sisters, though if I could make out their conversation I think the episode would definitely be a Bechdel pass, or the black male cop who is seen but not heard. The 'Frances' reference only makes sense in context of a deleted scene, in which Sam is using an ID belonging to a white female police officer whose first name is Frances.

1x08 Death Tally:

1 white male, 1 white female

1x08 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x08 Notes:

The death tally does not include the surveyor allergic to bees, whose gender and ethnicity are unspecified, or the dozens of Native Americans whose murders inspired the curse. Also not counted are the construction workers, who include two black men, or the college students, about evenly split male/female and of various ethnicities, or the people in Sepulpa, all of whom are Native American, or most of the people at the barbecue, who include several women. (There is definitely a woman speaking to Linda about homeownership, though--Bechdel pass, yay!)

1x09 Death Tally:

1 white female (1 recurring)

1x09 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x09 Notes:

The death tally does not include the poltergeist, who we're told is a spirit of unspecified gender and ethnicity, and does include Mary, though she was counted in the Pilot. Missouri's customer is black, so it's likelier than not that his wife is also black; she is not counted one way or another, but if she is nonwhite then the ep passes the race-Bechdel.

1x10 Death Tally:

1 white female, 2 white males

1x10 Privilege-Related Insults:

1 'son of a bitch' Dean to flashlight

1x10 Notes:

The death tally does not include two individuals of unspecified gender and ethnicity who broke into the asylum and died as a result, nor the white female who kisses Gavin, the white male in the straitjacket, the white female who approaches Sam, the white male who approaches Kat, or anyone else who can be presumed to have died in the riot (though the death tally does include Sanford Ellicott, who did die in the riot). Also not counted are two white males and one white female who broke into the asylum, nor John, whose voice is never actually heard. I assume the dispatcher is a white male.

1x11 Death Tally:

3 white males, 2 white females

1x11 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x11 Notes:

The death tally does not include any of the people (even female-male split, unspecified ethnicity) who died in the Burkittsville orchard in previous years. I assume the Vanir is a white male--the scarecrow is certainly male, since it borrows the bodies of its male victims, and the Vanir's place of origin is Scandinavia.

1x12 Death Tally:

2 white males (1 gay), 2 white females

1x12 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x12 Notes:

The death tally does not include one white female whose death within six months of the episode's end is guaranteed, nor four people of unspecified gender and ethnicity who died when Roy performed other healings. The rawhead appears to be a white male and is counted as such. Not counted are the church attendees, who are about evenly split male-female and include various ethnicities, or the indistinct voices on the TV. Whenever sexuality is identifiable as other than straight, I'm taking note.

1x13 Death Tally:

2 black males, 2 white males

1x13 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x13 Notes:

The death tally does not include one black male killed by the ghost truck offscreen, nor any of the black males or the presumably-black, presumably-evenly-gender-split church members killed by Cyrus Dorian in the sixties. Also not counted are the various people at Jimmy's death site, most of whom are male and at least one of whom is black, or the people at Mayor Todd's death site, to whom the same applies. I assume the radio announcer is a white male. Also, nice one, show: there isn't even a possibility that the look-how-not-racist-we-are ep passes the race-Bechdel.

1x14 Death Tally:

3 white males

1x14 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x14 Notes:

The death tally does not include one white female killed within a few months of Mary Winchester. Also not counted are the various radio announcers or the indistinct voices at Jim Miller's scene of death or the wellwishers at the Millers' house.

1x15 Death Tally:

2 white males

1x15 Privilege-Related Insults:

1 'grandma' Dean to Sam, 2 'son of a bitch' Dean to no one in particular, Dean to Pa Bender, 4 'bitch' Dean about a lock, Pa Bender about and to Kathleen Hudak, Jared Bender to Kathleen Hudak

1x15 Notes:

The death tally does not include any of the Benders' previous victims, who appear to be all white males, or Missy Bender's mother, a white female. Also not counted are the people in the bar, who appear to be all white and nearly all male, or Gregory Washington, the black male police officer from whom Dean stole his Minnesota state cop badge. I don't know whether the first part of Kathleen's and Missy's conversation counts for a Bechdel pass--neither of them mentions a man for that part, but it's not the whole conversation and they're both thinking about men very loudly. The dispatcher is definitely female and I assume white, and I don't know whether her conversation with Kathleen counts as a Bechdel pass either.

1x16 Death Tally:

1 white female

1x16 Privilege-Related Insults:

1 'bitching' Dean to Sam, 1 'bitch' Dean about Meg

1x16 Notes:

The death tally does not include the white male killed by daevas before Meredith. Also not counted is the female voice of the alarm system, nor Dean's police friend Amy who is never seen let alone heard, nor Caleb, ditto, nor most of the people at the bar, who are about evenly split male-female and include black individuals. I am assuming the voice at 2:03 is Meg's, in part because Meredith addresses her pursuer which means I don't have to wonder if Kristen's voicemail makes the ep pass Bechdel. The passerby appears vaguely South Asian but I'm not sure enough to count her as nonwhite.

1x17 Death Tally:

1 South Asian female

1x17 Privilege-Related Insults:

1 'skank-filled jars' male about décor, 1 'Mom's basement' Dean about Ed and Harry, 1 'this is why you never get laid' Dean to Sam, 1 'chick' Dean to Sam, 1 'fame, money, sex--with girls' Ed to Harry, 2 'son of a bitch' Dean about Mordecai, Sam to Mordecai

1x17 Notes:

Not counted are the other patrons of the diner or the record store, half of whom are female and all of whom appear to be white, or the white female Dana, who is seen only in flashback and never speaks. I'm not sure whether the exchange between Jill and her female friend counts as a Bechdel pass.

1x18 Death Tally:

1 white male

1x18 Privilege-Related Insults:

None!

1x18 Notes:

The death tally does not include any of the striga's previous victims. Also not counted is Asher, a white male who is seen but never speaks, nor the various people at the hospital, who include several females, at least one of whom is black, nor the patrons of the library, who are predominantly female. The victims in this episode include two white females, Mary and Bethany, two white males, Asher and an unnamed boy, and three other children, gender and ethnicity unknown though at least one is probably a sibling of the unnamed white male victim. At least one of those three is unrelated to the unnamed white male victim: Dean's map indicates the homes of the three families attacked, who do not at this point include Asher.

1x19 Death Tally:

3 white females, 1 white male

1x19 Privilege-Related Insults:

1 'this Sarah girl' from Dean

1x19 Notes:

The death tally does not include any of Melanie Merchant's previous victims of unidentified gender and ethnicity excepting her white birth family and white adoptive family, or one white female, Sarah Blake's mother. Also not counted are the patrons at the bar, who appear to be equally split female/male and include at least one black man, or the patrons at the charity auction, ditto, or the patrons at the restaurant, ditto except that they appear all white.

1x20 Death Tally:

4 white males, 1 black male

1x20 Privilege-Related Insults:

3 'son of a bitch' Dean about situation, John about Azazel, Luther to John

1x20 Notes:

Not counted are the other patrons of the bar, who appear to all be white males, or the cops, ditto, or at the diner, one white male and one white female, or the vampires' pen of victims, who include a black male. Also not counted in the character list are the white female vampire, a white male vampire, and the black male vampire, as none of those three speak, though the black male vampire must be counted in the death tally. The dispatcher sounds female and I assume she is white.

1x21 Death Tally:

2 white males (2 recurring)

1x21 Privilege-Related Insults:

3 'son of a bitch' Dean about situation, John about Azazel, Luther to John

1x21 Notes:

Not counted is the white female Rosie Holt, any of the staff or patients at either medical center, who appear to be mostly female and all white, the other six-month-olds and their parents including a presumably-East-Asian Mary Ann Liu and her father and possibly mother, or Azazel, who does not speak but whom I would count as a white male if he did.

1x22 Death Tally:

1 white female, 2 white males (3 recurring)

1x22 Privilege-Related Insults:

1 'bitch' Dean to Meg, 6 'girl' Meg about herself, Dean to Meg and 2 about her, 2 Bobby about Meg, 2 'son of a bitch' Meg to Dean, Dean to Azazel, 1 'pretty little Jess' from Azazel

1x22 Notes:

The death tally does not include Meg, who is exorcised rather than killed, but does include the man Meg's friend possesses though he never speaks; I count the demon itself as a white male. Also not counted are the inhabitants of Sunrise Apartments, who appear mostly female and include an East Asian female, or Meg's friend or the white male demon trucker. I refer to Meg the demon as Meg and Meg the human as Meg Masters; I have no idea whether there was any communication between the two or whether such counts as a Bechdel pass.
